Gary O’Brien Photography

In 1957, I was born into a family that photographed its lives.
Eight years later, It was natural to be gifted a simple camera.

During family trips to New Mexico, I began to notice the rise and fall of the land, and how light and shadow affected my mood and perceptions of the landscape.

At age 14, I "borrowed" my father's camera, and soon got my own to cover school events. My after-school job bought me some Kodachrome and I began photographing Arizona.

After high school, I discovered Ansel Adams. Exploring New Mexico I found his work evoked my own feelings about the places I visited.

My university studies in chemistry morphed into a degree in photojournalism. I worked in newspapers for 35 years, following this idea: "Don't show me what It looks like, show me what it feels like”.

Today, I follow that light in the Sonoran Desert.
